I happened to be working at home today and was able to see the live broadcast of the Inauguration. I was glad I could see it and be a part of it first-hand.  But in the days leading up to it, I have been struck by something I had to share here. 

I saw an interview this morning that Matt Lauer (Today Show) had with Colin Powell. He listed a litany of things that would all fall on President Barak Obama’s desk — and it was a daunting list.

• The war in Iraq
• Conflict in Afghanistan
• Continued violence in the Middle East (Gaza, Iran)
• Global Economic Crisis
• Etc., etc., etc.

Then he asked Colin Powell “Are we putting too much on one man?”.   And that is the question that had me thinking today.

Yes, I think there are some (maybe even many) in this country who are putting all of their hope in one man.  The problem with that is that there is a limit to what Barak Obama can do.  He is one man. Yes, he is a very intelligent man who is capable and has a staff and collection of colleagues and peers who support him – but he is still one man.  He has limits.

But there is One who has no limits, One who is limitless, One who created everything on this earth, One who never sleeps or slumbers, who never grows weary, never grows tired. One who is fully ABLE to take on every single world problem and every individual crisis. He knows every single person by name and has called each of us to Him – that is our Lord Jesus Christ and He is the One we should ultimately put our hope in.

Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.
He will not grow tired or weary, and His understanding no one can fathom.
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.  Even youths grow tired and weary and young men fall;
but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

(Isaiah 40:28-31)

Does that mean we should not pray for our new President?  Of course not!   Nor do I want to take anything away from this day.  But if we as a people adored God in the same way….oh how He would bless our nation!  My hope and prayer is that as Barak Obama takes on this tremendous mantle of responsibility, may he lean on Christ — the only One who can give wisdom, discernment, peace and strength….and may Barak Obama’s faith grow each day so that he can stand on the Solid Rock — able to face each challenge that comes before him with God’s grace, peace and wisdom.

“But the man who makes Me his refuge will inherit the land and possess my holy mountain.”  (Isaiah 57:13b)
